FINDING LOST MONEY:  WHERE'S YOUR OLD 401(K)?

Retirement is a common concern for most people…do I have enough? Will I be able to survive on the earnings I have accumulated?

What many don’t consider is the money left behind.

It happens more often than people realize. From 401(k)s that people have at old jobs, or money left in accounts that they just don’t know how to access.

Thankfully, there is a process for checking unclaimed property like this.

Have A Family Meeting

Have A Family Meeting

One of the most important topics to make sure all family is clear on is final wishes, financial decisions or ongoing concerns and business decisions.  If you're thinking about having this conversation with your adult children or your aging parents, this time of year is a great time to establish the tradition of the Annual Family Meeting.

Why have a family meeting?

>  Plan major trips & events or the annual family calendar
>  Remaining Connected to each other
>  Making important decisions together or being made aware of decisions that impact everyone.

Feel free to use out our Data Sharing Guide below and use it as a checklist of what documents you may want to start collecting. This is the same document we use to collect documents from clients to start their financial plan.

Once your first family meeting is scheduled, be sure to solicit feedback from family members on the agenda items and loop in any professionals so that they can provide financial statements, documents like Wills or Trust or anything else that's relevant.

Be sure to check out Kristin Afelumo's segment on News on 6 Tulsa from 11/20/24 where she chats about how to bring up this idea to your family.

How to plan for your inheritance

How to plan for your inheritance

Here are a few tips from Kristin's June 2024 appearance on News on 6 Tulsa:

🗣️Talk to your kids early and often about money. They’re hungry for the information. Kristin gave a shout out to the young adults she had the privilege of speaking to at a recent event for Thunder Fellows. They’re high school & college and are ready to make their own moves with money. "My opinion?", Kristin said, "They would have used this information in middle school so they knew exactly what to do when they turned 18 (some of them are already investing!) Even middle schoolers I’ve spoken to in the past are super intuitive about money and understand complex strategies if they’re explained simply."

🤝 Involve them in conversations with your money professionals. Whether it’s your Family Office or a quick meeting with your CPA, Financial Planner (💁🏾‍♀️) or Attorney, involve them in the meetings so they understand the strategies you’re using. Your kids are less likely to undo the planning you’ve done when yourr gone if they were there when the decision was made and get your rationale.

🙅🏾‍♀️If your aforementioned professionals don’t work well with your kids, don’t get the point of meeting with them, don’t take their calls, talk down to them, *fire them*. Your kids are going to do it eventually. Save them the trouble of having to find a new professional on their own. Find a team now that works for everyone.

🤑Most importantly, kids, adult or littles, will do what they see you do not what you tell them to do. Set a good example and remember to pass down the *Values* that are important to you and your family, not just the *Value* in your portfolio.

More in the video! Contact us to chat about passing money down to your kids (or if you’re planning to inherit & need to chat)!
